For the golfing enthusiast, Ruston is home to the Louisiana Tech University golf course and Ruston Country Club golf course. The fabulous 18 hole Tom Fazio designed Squire Creek Country Club is located just five minutes from Ruston. Additionally, other local courses offer golfers plenty of challenges and a variety of layouts made possible by the hilly terrain. Within a 30 minute drive of Ruston sit more than a dozen courses - each varying in length and looks, but all nestled in the rolling hills of North Louisiana. It's simply a golfer's delight to live around such beautiful courses.
Recreational sports leagues can be found for both young and old wanting to compete and have fun.
The Ruston Parks and Recreation Department (RPAR) sponsors men's and women's softball leagues, basketball leagues and numerous other activities for the sports buff. Ruston residents never suffer from a lack of activities in which to participate.
Where did they learn their competitive spirit? Probably by playing youth league sports as a youngster in the Ruston area. Youth league participation is so big here that two separate baseball leagues exist. A girl’s ponytail softball league is also quite active each summer.
During the winter months, RPAR sponsors basketball leagues for the youngsters. A church boys and girls high school basketball league is also sponsored annually by both Temple Baptist Church and First Baptist Church.
For those individuals who enjoy the arts and entertainment, Ruston is simply "peachy." Yes, that's right. Ruston has been home to the annual Squire Creek Louisiana Peach Festival since 1951. The festival opens with local events in early June and reaches a crescendo when people come from near and far for the Saturday before Father's Day to watch the parade, browse the arts and crafts show, and simply enjoy a slice of Louisiana life. Throughout the festival, different activities are held, including sporting events, a street dance, outdoor concerts, a fine arts exhibit and a rodeo.
It might not be Broadway, but it is the Ruston way. Four or five times a year, outstanding theatrical performances are put on by the Ruston Community Theater. Also, the School for the Performing Arts at Louisiana Tech provides refreshing, seasoned performances year round.
For those people interested in art, Ruston is a work to behold. Beautiful pieces of art are scattered around the parish. From world-renowned potters to watercolor artists and sculptors, Lincoln Parish offers residents and visitors numerous opportunities to see these craftsmen at work.
Louisiana Tech University, as well as several local artisans, offer educational outlets for those wishing to develop their own artistic talents.
Antique lovers are also offered a wonderful selection of pieces as the North Louisiana area is home to numerous shops. These quaint establishments are a treasure hunter's dream come true. Simply put, it is amazing how many local attractions can be found in Lincoln Parish.
For the history buff, two local museums are available. Visitors can trace the area's history at the Lincoln Parish Museum. The Louisiana Military Museum, also located in Ruston, offers both the seasoned veteran and the curious child an in-depth glimpse into our nation's military history from a distinctly local perspective.
What else could a person want? How about collegiate sports? Do the names Terry Bradshaw, Karl Malone and Eddie Robinson mean anything to you? How about the Lady Techsters? Well, they definitely mean something to Lincoln Parish residents who, through the years, have watched them shine. As fall rolls around each year, the sounds of the Tech and Grambling bands fill the air, and it's time to pass the pigskin.
After the final touchdown is scored every year, the roundball comes into full focus for area fans. Three National Championships. Never a losing season in 25 years of excellence.
Lady Techsters. Basketball. Enough said.
